Match background Only this chapter

Royal Antwerp and Eintracht Frankfurt meet for the first time in European competition as both teams look to bounce back from a disappointing start to UEFA Europa League Group D.

• While Antwerp were going down 2-1 on Matchday 1 to Olympiacos in Piraeus despite Ally Mbwana Samatta's 18th European goal, Eintracht were held 1-1 at home by Fenerbahçe, Dutchman Sam Lammers' equaliser proving sufficient to earn the German side a point.

Previous meetings
• Antwerp have not faced German opposition for over 30 years, Köln having knocked them out of successive UEFA Cups in 1988/89 and 1989/90 with an aggregate victory over Stuttgart in between. The Great Old's home record against Bundesliga opposition is W1 D1 L1.

• Frankfurt shared a pair of 2-1 home wins with Standard Liège in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League group stage and have yet to win in three visits to Belgium, most famously losing 1-0 at KV Mechelen (also on aggregate) in the quarter-final second leg of the 1988/89 European Cup Winners' Cup.

Form guide
Antwerp
• Antwerp finished third in Belgium's top flight last season, nine points behind champions Club Brugge, and are competing in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the second successive season thanks to a penalty shoot-out victory over Omonoia in the play-offs (2-4 a, 2-0 h) – the club's first European tie under new Danish coach Brian Priske.

• Belgium's oldest club had gone 25 years between European participations (1994/95 to 2019/20) and last season played UEFA group stage football for the first time, finishing second in their section below Tottenham and above LASK and Ludogorets before going out to Rangers in the highest-scoring UEFA Europa League knockout phase tie of all time (3-4 h, 2-5 a) in the round of 32.

• European Cup Winners' Cup runners-up to Parma in 1992/93, Antwerp have won five and lost five of their European home fixtures since that final at Wembley, alternating victories and defeats in the last eight of those matches.

Eintracht
• Having been absent from Europe in 2020/21, Eintracht Frankfurt are back for a third UEFA Europa League group stage campaign in four seasons – and fourth in all – thanks to their fifth-placed finish in the Bundesliga. They have since replaced coach Adi Hütter with another Austrian, Oliver Glasner, who was in charge of fourth-placed Wolfsburg last term.

• Eintracht have qualified for the knockout phase on each of their previous three group stage appearances, notably reaching the semi-finals in 2018/19, when they were denied a place in the final only by a penalty shoot-out defeat against eventual winners Chelsea. They won all six of their group games that season – the only German club ever to achieve the feat – but despite accumulating just half as many points the following season still went through to the round of 32, where they overcame Salzburg (4-1 h, 2-2 a) before going out to Basel (0-3 h, 0-1 a).

• Eintracht have won seven of their nine away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League group stage, losing the other two. They have a perfect record of three wins out of three in their opening away game in the group, beating APOEL 3-0 on Matchday 2 in 2013/14, Marseille 2-1 on Matchday 1 in 2018/19 and Guimarães 1-0 on Matchday 2 in 2019/20.

Links and trivia
• Antwerp midfielder Radja Nainggolan's next appearance in UEFA club competition will be his 50th.

• Brazilian defender Tuta spent 2019/20 on loan at Belgian club Kortrijk from Frankfurt.

• Several Antwerp players have experience of German football – Birger Verstraete (Köln 2019/20), Viktor Fischer (Mainz 2017/18), Johannes Eggestein (Werder Bremen 2013–20) and Michael Frey (Nürnberg 2019/20).

• While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season's group stage, Eintracht are one of five clubs involved to have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup; PSV Eindhoven (Group B), Napoli (C), Galatasaray (E) and fellow German side Bayer Leverkusen (G) are the others.

UEFA Nations League tickets
General ticket sales for the 2021 UEFA Nations League finals in Milan and Turin are under way and will run until all tickets have been sold. Italian authorities have confirmed stadium capacities of at least 50% for the four-match tournament, which takes place between 6 and 10 October. Tickets reserved for the general public are being sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Fans can purchase up to two tickets per person.
