Match background Only this chapter

Celtic and Ferencváros kick off Matchday 3 of the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League with both clubs seeking their first point in Group G.

• Celtic prop up the group table having conceded eight goals in their opening two fixtures – the most of any club in the competition – as they followed up a 3-4 defeat by Real Betis in Seville with a 0-4 reverse to Bayer Leverkusen in Glasgow. The Hungarian champions also followed an away loss (1-2 at Leverkusen) with a home defeat (1-3 vs Betis).

Previous meetings
• The clubs' one previous meeting came in last season's UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, Ferencváros winning the one-off tie 2-1 at Celtic Park with Tokmac Nguen scoring the decisive goal.

• That was Celtic's first ever home defeat by Hungarian opposition, the previous six having yielded five wins and a draw. It was also Ferencváros's second successive win in Scotland following a 1-0 win at Hearts in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup group stage. Their only other match in the country took place in September 1960 – a 4-2 defeat by Rangers in the European Cup Winners' Cup first round.

Form guide
Celtic
• Celtic missed out on an unprecedented tenth successive Scottish league title last season, finishing 25 points adrift of arch-rivals Rangers as Premiership runners-up. Their European campaign ended in the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they came bottom of a section including AC Milan, LOSC Lille and Sparta Praha.

• This term, under new manager Ange Postecoglou, Celtic were unable to negotiate the UEFA Champions League qualifying phase for the fourth successive summer, losing after extra time to Midtjylland in the second qualifying round (1-1 h, 1-2 a), but subsequent UEFA Europa League qualifying victories over Jablonec (4-2 a, 3-0 h) and AZ Alkmaar (2-0 h, 1-2 a) put them into the competition's group stage for the eighth time. The Glasgow giants have made further progress in just three of their previous seven participations, once as group winners (2019/20).

• Celtic have lost three of their last four UEFA Europa League group stage matches at Celtic Park, the defeat by Leverkusen making their all-time home record in the competition proper W11 D4 L11.

Ferencváros
• Champions of Hungary for the third season in a row under former coach Serhiy Rebrov – and a record 32nd time in all – in 2020/21, Ferencváros also competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage, finishing bottom of a section including Juventus, Barcelona and Dynamo Kyiv with a single point.

• Ferencváros came through three UEFA Champions League qualifying ties under new coach Peter Stöger this summer – against Prishtina (3-0 h, 3-1 a), Žalgiris Vilnius (2-0 h, 3-1 a) and Slavia Praha (2-0 h, 0-1 a) – but lost their play-off to Young Boys (2-3 a, 2-3 h). They are therefore back in the UEFA Europa League group stage, where they have competed once before, in 2019/20, when they finished third in a section including Espanyol, Ludogorets and CSKA Moskva.

• Fradi were unbeaten in their three away fixtures in that 2019/20 group campaign (W1 D2), but the defeat at Leverkusen means they have now lost seven of their 12 UEFA group games on the road (W3 D2), including all three in last season's UEFA Champions League.

Links and trivia
• Ferencváros goalkeeper Ádám Bogdán played for Scottish club Hibernian from 2018 to 2020. He kept goal for the Edinburgh club in a 4-2 defeat away to Celtic on 20 October 2018, Tom Rogic scoring the home side's opening goal.

• Róbert Mak, Ferencváros's Slovakian international, started his career in the Manchester City academy when Celtic's Joe Hart was establishing himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper (2008–10). They played against each other in two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Hart's England winning both matches – 1-0 in Trnava and 2-1 in London.

• Celtic are one of four former European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners competing in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage – together with PSV Eindhoven (Group B), Marseille (E) and Crvena zvezda (F).

• Ferencváros are one of eight reigning domestic champions competing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage.
