Match background Only this chapter

The champions of Scotland and Denmark are both looking for their first goals in UEFA Europa League Group A as Rangers and Brøndby meet in Glasgow on Matchday 3.

• Rangers have lost both of their first two matches, 0-2 at home to Lyon and 0-1 away to Sparta Praha, while Brøndby are one point better off, their 0-3 defeat in France on Matchday 2 preceded by a goalless draw at home to Sparta.

Previous meetings
• This is the first time the clubs have met in UEFA competition.

• Rangers are unbeaten at home to Danish opponents (W3 D1), their most recent contest bringing a 3-1 win against Midtjylland in the second leg of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round to complete a 7-3 aggregate triumph, Alfredo Morelos scoring three goals across the two matches.

• Brøndby have won two of their three previous matches in Scotland, most recently 1-0 at Hibernian in the second qualifying round first leg of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League – a tie they ultimately won on penalties. This is their first visit to Glasgow.

Form guide
• Undefeated champions of Scotland in 2020/21 as they claimed a record-extending 55th domestic league title, Rangers also played 13 matches in the UEFA Europa League, progressing from the second qualifying round to the round of 16, where they were eliminated by Slavia Praha (1-1 a, 0-2 h).

• Rangers returned to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in a decade this term, but their adventure lasted just two matches as they lost both third qualifying round legs 2-1 to Malmö and therefore transferred to the UEFA Europa League play-offs, where they edged Armenian champions Alashkert (1-0 h, 0-0 a) to reach the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fourth successive season. They have improved in each of the previous three campaigns, all under manager Steven Gerrard, finishing third in 2018/19, second in 2019/20 and first, ahead of Benfica, Standard Liège and Lech Poznań, in 2020/21.

• The Glasgow giants have lost just five of their last 28 European home matches (W17 D6), although three of those defeats have come in the last four – against Slavia, Malmö and Lyon, the latter result bringing an end to their unbeaten record at Ibrox in the UEFA Europa League group stage (W5 D4).

• Brøndby won the Danish Superliga in 2020/21, claiming their first league title since 2014/15 and their 11th in all. They did not compete in Europe last season – their first without continental involvement since 2013/14.

• That Danish title win earned Niels Frederiksen's side a place in this season's UEFA Champions League play-offs, but they were defeated 2-1 in both games by Salzburg and are therefore competing in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time, becoming the sixth different Danish participants. It is Brøndby's first involvement in any European group stage since the 2005/06 UEFA Cup, in which they picked up four points from their four matches and failed to qualify for the knockout phase.

• Brøndby are on a run of six successive away defeats in UEFA competition. They have just one win in their last 11 European games on the road, 2-0 at Spartak Subotica in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, the other ten having all been lost.

Links and trivia
• Rangers' Filip Helander and Brøndby's Simon Hedlund are both Swedish internationals.

• Rangers and Brøndby are two of eight reigning domestic champions competing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage.

• The Danish club are one of just two newcomers to the UEFA Europa League proper in 2021/22, the other West Ham United in Group H.øndby+facts
