Match background Only this chapter

Eintracht Frankfurt and Olympiacos meet on Matchday 3 with leadership of UEFA Europa League Group D at stake, the German side trailing their table-topping Greek visitors by two points.

• A 91st-minute Gonçalo Paciência penalty earned Frankfurt all three points away to Antwerp on Matchday 2, their opening fixture having ended 1-1 at home to a Fenerbahçe side who missed an added-time spot kick of their own. Olympiacos, meanwhile, have two wins from two, two fine strikes from Greek international Giorgos Masouras sealing a sumptuous 3-0 victory at Fenerbahçe after they had kicked off with a 2-1 home win against Antwerp.

Previous meetings
• The clubs have never previously met in UEFA competition.

• Eintracht's two previous home games against Greek sides have both ended in victory, although there have been no such contests since 1995.

• Olympiacos have made eight previous trips to Germany, losing seven of the matches and failing to score in all of those defeats, the most recent against Bayern München on Matchday 4 of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League (0-2). The exception was a 3-1 win at Werder Bremen in the 2007/08 group stage of the same competition – Olympiacos's first ever away victory in the UEFA Champions League proper at the 32nd attempt.

Form guide
Eintracht
• Having been absent from Europe in 2020/21, Eintracht Frankfurt are back for a third UEFA Europa League group stage campaign in four seasons – and fourth in all – thanks to their fifth-placed finish in the Bundesliga. They have since replaced coach Adi Hütter with another Austrian, Oliver Glasner, who was in charge of fourth-placed Wolfsburg last term.

• Eintracht have qualified for the knockout phase on each of their previous three group stage appearances, notably reaching the semi-finals in 2018/19, when they were denied a place in the final only by a penalty shoot-out defeat against eventual winners Chelsea. They won all six of their group games that season – the only German club ever to achieve the feat – but despite accumulating just half as many points the following season still went through to the round of 32, where they overcame Salzburg (4-1 h, 2-2 a) before going out to Basel (0-3 h, 0-1 a).

• The 1980 UEFA Cup winners claimed maximum points from their first six home games in the UEFA Europa League group stage but have won just one of the last four (D1 L2). Their home record in the competition as a whole, including qualifying, is now W14 D4 L3, the defeats having all come in the last six matches.

Olympiacos
• Champions of Greece for a record-extending 46th time in 2020/21, when they finished 26 points ahead of runners-up PAOK, who defeated them 2-1 in the Greek Cup final, Olympiacos finished third in their UEFA Champions League group last term before reaching the round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League – a repeat of the previous season.

• The Piraeus giants have been involved in the UEFA Europa League knockout phase on eight occasions but this is only their third group stage participation, the previous two appearances, in 2016/17 and 2018/19, the latter under current coach Pedro Martins, having both brought further progress as section runners-up. They arrived this season via a play-off win over Slovan Bratislava (3-0 h, 2-2 a), having lost on penalties to Ludogorets in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League (1-1 h, 2-2 a) following an earlier victory over Neftçi of Azerbaijan (1-0 h, 1-0 a).

• Olympiacos have lost ten of their 19 away fixtures in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, but have recorded three wins in the last five and are now unbeaten in their last five European matches on the road (W3 D2).

Links and trivia
• Gonçalo Paciência spent the first half of 2016/17 on loan at Olympiacos but illness restricted him to a single first-team appearance. He was subsequently a team-mate of the Greek side's Portuguese striker Tiquinho Soares at Porto from February to June 2018.

• Two players in Olympiacos's squad have played in Germany – Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Werder Bremen 2011–13, Borussia Dortmund 2013–18) and Pierre Kunde (Mainz 2018–21).

• Papastathopoulos played 12 times for Dortmund against Frankfurt, scoring once, and was in the BVB side that beat Eintracht 2-1 in the 2016/17 German Cup final.

• Kunde scored for Mainz in a 2-0 Bundesliga win away to Frankfurt on 6 June 2020.

• Frankfurt's Erik Durm and Sebastian Rode played with Papastathopoulos at Dortmund, and Danny da Costa was a team-mate of Kunde at Mainz.

• Aymen Barkok (Frankfurt) and Youssef El-Arabi (Olympiacos) are both Moroccan internationals.

• Almamy Touré (Frankfurt) was a Monaco team-mate of Olympiacos's Rony Lopes between 2017 and 2019.

• While there are no former UEFA Europa League winners in this season's group stage, Eintracht are one of five clubs involved to have lifted the trophy in its former guise as the UEFA Cup; PSV Eindhoven (Group B), Napoli (C), Galatasaray (E) and fellow German side Bayer Leverkusen (G) are the others.

• Olympiacos are one of eight reigning domestic champions competing in the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage.
