Match background Only this chapter

UEFA Europa League Group E reunites familiar European foes Lazio and Marseille as the two teams lock horns at the Stadio Olimpico in a potentially pivotal Matchday 3 encounter.

• Defeated 1-0 at Galatasaray on opening night, Lazio recovered to beat Lokomotiv Moskva 2-0 at home two weeks later and are a point ahead of Marseille, whose first two fixtures have both ended in draws – 1-1 in Moscow and 0-0 at home to table-topping Galatasaray.

Previous meetings
• This is the clubs' seventh meeting in UEFA competition, Lazio recording four victories to Marseille's one. In Rome the Italian club’s record is W2 D1.

• The clubs first went head to head in the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League second group stage, Lazio winning both matches – 2-0 in southern France and 5-1 in the Italian capital where Simone Inzaghi scored four of the goals – to reach the quarter-finals as Marseille went out.

• After a UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-final in 2005 that OM won 4-1 on aggregate (1-1 a, 3-0 h), the teams reconvened in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League group stage, where Lazio again claimed six points from the two matches, winning 3-1 at the Stade Vélodrome and 2-1 at the Olimpico to advance at their rivals' expense.

• Lazio's home record against French visitors is W7 D2 L2 with victories in the last four, all in the UEFA Europa League group stage. Most recently, two seasons ago they came from behind to beat Rennes 2-1 with goals from Sergej Milinković-Savić and Ciro Immobile.

• Marseille have won just one of their ten matches away to Italian clubs (D4 L5), losing there on their last three visits, most recently to Lazio. They were also defeated in the 1991 European Cup final in Bari, losing on penalties to Crvena zvezda after a goalless draw.

Form guide
• Sixth in Serie A last term, Lazio have returned, under new coach Maurizio Sarri, for a record-equalling ninth appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They spent 2020/21 under Inzaghi in the UEFA Champions League, where they were unbeaten runners-up to Borussia Dortmund in the autumn before going out to another German club, holders Bayern München, in the round of 16 (1-4 h, 1-2 a).

• Runners-up, to fellow Italians Inter, in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup, the Biancocelesti were on a run of six successful UEFA Europa League group stage participations – after failure in the first – until they managed only six points on their last appearance, in 2019/20, and finished a distant third behind Celtic and CFR Cluj. Their best performances in the competition came in 2012/13 and 2017/18, when they reached the quarter-finals.

• Lazio's home record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W17 D4 L4. They were on a run of 17 group games undefeated in Rome (W13 D4) until they lost 1-2 to Eintracht Frankfurt on Matchday 6 in 2018/19. The Serie A side have now lost three of their last six home games in the competition, though they have won the last two.

• Fifth in last season's Ligue 1, which they completed under current coach Jorge Sampaoli, who joined in February, Marseille have returned to the UEFA Europa League for a fifth appearance in the group stage – a record for a French club – after finishing fourth in their UEFA Champions League section last season behind Manchester City, Porto and Olympiacos on three points.

• The team from the south of France have only a 50% success rate in the UEFA Europa League group stage, having progressed to the knockout phase in 2015/16 and 2017/18 – when they were runners-up, losing 3-0 in the Lyon final to Atlético de Madrid – but failing to extend their involvement beyond Christmas in both 2012/13 and on their most recent participation in 2018/19, when they picked up just one point. They have never won their UEFA Europa League group.

• Marseille are without a European away win since they defeated Athletic Club 2-1 in Bilbao in the second leg of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League round of 16, losing seven of the subsequent nine matches including all three last season in the UEFA Champions League. Their overall away record in the UEFA Europa League group stage is W2 D4 L7, the Matchday 1 draw at Lokomotiv making it no wins in the last seven (D3 L4).

Links and trivia
• Turkish winger Cengiz Ünder and Spanish goalkeeper Pau López are both on loan to Marseille from Lazio's city rivals Roma. The latter played alongside his fellow countryman Pedro Rodríguez, now of Lazio, for the Giallorossi in 2020/21.

• Marseille's Brazilian midfielder Gerson is also a former Roma player (2016–19), though he spent the last of those seasons on loan at Fiorentina.

• Arkadiusz Milik, Marseille's Polish striker, played for Napoli from 2016 to 2020. His first two seasons were spent under current Lazio boss Sarri and his ex-Napoli team-mates include current Lazio pair Pepe Reina (2016–18) and Elseid Hysaj (2016–20).

• Marseille's Spanish defender Pol Lirola played in Italy for Sassuolo (2016–19) and Fiorentina (2019–21) before joining the French club in January. Lazio defender Francesco Acerbi played alongside him in his first two seasons at Sassuolo.

• Lazio's Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro (Toulouse 2011–17) and Toma Bašić (Bordeaux 2018–21) have both played in France. Bašić is a Croatia team-mate of Marseille's Duje Ćaleta-Car.

• Sarri was a UEFA Europa League-winning coach with Chelsea in 2018/19. He is the only coach in this season's group stage to have won the competition, although Fatih Terim of Group E rivals Galatasaray led the Turkish club to their UEFA Cup triumph in 1999/2000.

• Lazio's ninth UEFA Europa League group stage appearance is a record they share with fellow 2021/22 competitors PSV Eindhoven and Rapid Wien.

• Marseille are one of four former European Cup/UEFA Champions League winners competing in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage – together with PSV Eindhoven (Group B), their 1991 final conquerors Crvena zvezda (F), and Celtic (G).
