Drazen Besek is the new coach of Croatian UEFA Cup qualifiers NK Varteks, replacing Branko Janzek.
Besek feels responsible
Besek steps up from the backroom staff to take charge of a club he has served as player and coach. "It is a good feeling, but also a big responsibility," the 39-year-old said.
In 1998, as player-manager, Besek led the Varazdin side to victory in the HNS Kup. The following year they reached the last eight of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. "The club has a good tradition and I know the fans want to win trophies. But it is too soon to speak about next season," Besek said.
Varteks finished fourth in the Croatian Premier League and lost 2-1 on aggregate to NK Dinamo Zagreb in the HNS Cup final. "I am disappointed, but my players were not up to the task," commented a rueful Janzek.
