Cyprus round-up: Derby delight for APOEL

A Konstantinos Charalambides goal gave APOEL Nicosia FC a 1-0 victory over Olympiakos Nicosia FC.

UEFA Cup hopefuls APOEL Nicosia FC preserved their unbeaten Division A record with a 1-0 victory over title rivals Olympiakos Nicosia FC on Sunday.

Hot-tempered derby
Konstantinos Charalambides got the only goal of a hot-tempered Nicosia derby on 79 minutes after playing a clever one-two with Marios Agathocleous and scoring to lift his side level on points with Omonia Nicosia FC at the top of the table.

Rauffmann opener
Omonia stayed at the summit on goal difference after securing a 4-1 win against AEK Larnaca FC at the GSP stadium. Rainer Marcos Rauffmann put Omonia ahead on 14 minutes with a powerful header from Marco Haber's cross before Ljubisa Kekic added the second on the half-hour mark with a well-hit drive. AEK managed to pull a goal back after the break through a Kostas Frantzeskos penalty, but their hopes of a revival were dashed when Rauffmann and Kekic doubled their respective tallies.

Luphahla lead
Anorthosis Famagusta FC were brought back down to earth following their UEFA Cup victory against Iraklis FC in midweek by finishing on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline against struggling AEP Paphos FC. Zimbabwe international Joel Luphahla gave AEP the lead with a good header from fellow Zimbabwe international Zenzo Moyo’s acrobatic pass but Anorthosis hit back with two Marios Neophytou goals a minute either side of half-time. But a stirring second-half performance from the hosts produced three further goals, scored by substitute Yiannakis Sampson and Sasa Jovanovic (2).

Winning ways
In Paralimni, home side Enosis Neon Paralimniou FC got back to winning ways in style with a 6-0 triumph agianst lowly Aris Limassol FC. Two goals from Demos Goumenos and further strikes from Angelos Tsolakkis, Georgi Donkov, Pavlos Tsolakkis and Antonis Mertakkas gifted Stavros Papadopoulos’ team their first win of the season whilst also made sure Aris – who had Savvas Exouzides sent off in the final minute – remain rooted to the bottom of the table without a point.

AEL thrashed
Elsewhere, Dighenis Morphou FC recorded a 2-1 victory away from home against Apollon Limassol FC and Nea Salmis FC beat AEL Limassol FC 6-1 with two goals apiece for Athos Angelis, Pambis Andreou and Nicos Nicoalou. The weekend's only other game, Alki FC's home tie with Ethnikos Achnas FC, ended in a 0-0 draw.
