Greece round-up: Derby win boosts PAOK

FC PAOK Thessaloniki triumphed in Saturday's Thessalonika derby to boost their title challenge.

FC PAOK Thessaloniki triumphed in Saturday's Thessalonika derby to boost their title challenge.

Title challenge
PAOK beat local rivals FC Aris Thessaloniki 3-2 to draw level on points with league leaders Olympiakos Piraeus FC, but they could be pushed back down to third place on Sunday if Olympiakos and second-placed AEK Athens FC both win.

Aris go ahead
Aris took the lead after just eight minutes when SV Werder Bremen-bound striker Angelos Charisteas finished from a narrow angle after collecting Kostas Lubutis' angled pass, but PAOK levelled five minutes later through Cypriot striker Yiassemis Yiassemakis.

PAOK strike back
PAOK kept the pressure on and they hit the post through Yiannakis Okkas before Yugoslavian forward Sladjan Spasic made it it 2-1 after 22 minutes, and Spasic was on target again with half an hour to go from Yiassemakis' cross.

Consolation goal
Fernando Navas, newly-signed from AEK, restored some local pride for Aris by scoring a consolation goal three minutes into injury time.
