Sweden round-up: Henriksson double spells Göteborg relief

IFK Göteborg overcame local rivals Västra Frölunda IF 2-0 to win the promotion/relegation play-off.

IFK Göteborg ensured a 27th consecutive season of Allsvenskan football after winning their promotion/relegation play-off second leg against local rivals Västra Frölunda IF 2-0 to stay up with a 3-1 aggregate win.

Close call
Twice UEFA Cup winners Göteborg, Swedish champions five times in the 1990s, had been forced to compete for their top-flight lives after finishing 12th this season and avoiding automatic relegation by just a single point, but found their form when they needed to at the Gamla Ullevi after drawing their away leg 1-1.

Pressure tells
Göteborg made their pressure tell on 41 minutes when Jonas Henriksson took advantage of a mix-up between Frölunda defender Mats Hedén and goalkeeper John Alvbåge to slip the loose ball into an empty net. Henriksson then doubled the lead seconds before half-time when he outran Henrik Larsson to score his second of the night.

'This is a relief'
Although Göteborg could not add to their lead after the break, they constantly looked dangerous on the break and never looked likely to concede their elite status. Relieved Göteborg coach Roger Gustafsson admitted after the game: "This is a relief. There has been enormous pressure, and now we can finally look forward."
