Azerbaijan is mourning Fuad Musayev, the former president of the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA), who has passed away at the age of 79.

Fuad Musayev, who was born on 11 January 1938, was at the helm of the AFFA from 1992 to 2003, and led Azerbaijan into the European and world football communities following the country’s declaration of independence in August 1991.

The AFFA was founded in 1992, and became a member of both UEFA and the world football body FIFA two years later.

He served as a member of the UEFA Committee for the European Football Championship (1994–2000), Development and Assistance Committee (2000-02) and Assistance Programmes Committee (2002-04).

“Mr Musayev played a significant role in the establishment and organisation of football governance in Azerbaijan, and was a distinguished member of the football community,” said the AFFA general secretary, Elkhan Mammadov.

UEFA extends its deepest sympathies to Mr Musayev’s family.
