Mihai Ionescu, the former general secretary of the Romanian Football Federation, has died aged 78.
Mihai Ionescu, general secretary of the Romanian Football Federation between 1982 and 1988, has died aged 78.
Ionescu was at various times a player, coach, journalist and publicist as well as holding a number of leading administrative roles, helping to develop Romanian football regulations, and writing several influential books.
Successful football school
He was also heavily involved in the foundation of the Bucharest-based Luceafarul football school, which went on to produce the likes of Gheorghe Hagi, Gheorghe Popescu, Ovidiu Sabau, Dan Petrescu, Dorin Mateut and Gavril Balint.
