Akhalkatsi appointed in Georgia

The Football Federation of Georgia has appointed Nodar Akhalkatsi as president after an extraordinary congress.

Congress support
Akhalkatsi, 28, was selected by the GFF's extraordinary congress after he was supported by the three other initial candidates for the post. They were the former FC Dinamo Tbilisi and Georgia captain Georgi Nemsadze, GFF vice-president Revaz Arveladze and former Dinamo player and Georgia coach Vladimir Gutsaev, a member of the country's parliament.

Famous father
The appointment, confirmed on Saturday in Tbilisi, means Akhalkatsi will follow in the footsteps of his namesake father, who was the first-ever president of the GFF as well as a distinguished coach of Georgia and the USSR. Akhalkatsi Jr has previously worked on the GFF's international relations committee and went on to study law in Germany.

Interim leader
Former president Jordania left his post in April while under a criminal investigation. First vice-president Aleksandr Chivadze had taken charge on an interim basis until the extraordinary congress could take place.
