Manchester City FC have signed RCD Espanyol forward Albert Riera on loan for the rest of the season with a view to a €5m summer transfer.
The 23-year-old joined Espanyol for €3m from FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the summer but has not found the net in eight league matches, four of which he has started. Espanyol coach Miguel Ángel Lotina said of the former RCD Mallorca winger: "I can't promise that he'll get many playing minutes for us so this offer opens new doors for him. As a club we have everything to gain and nothing to lose from this deal."
City manager Stuart Pearce added: "We tracked him when he was at Bordeaux and last summer he moved to Espanyol. We saw the opportunity when things hadn't worked out there to bring him here and he's on-loan until the summer. If things work out well for him here we might well keep him on beyond that."
FA Cup chance
The Manchester side are ninth in the Premiership after 21 matches and are hoping to get clearance to field their new No19, who is particularly effective as a left-sided winger, in their FA Cup game against Scunthorpe United FC at the weekend.
