Quinn handed coaching role by Sunderland

Sunderland FC have appointed Niall Quinn as player-coach after making a number of staff changes.

FA Premiership side Sunderland AFC have named veteran striker Niall Quinn as their new player-coach after announcing a number of changes to their backroom staff.

'New ideas and enthusiasm'
Manager Peter Reid has promoted the 35-year-old former Republic of Ireland forward to a new position, with Adrian Heath becoming his assistant at the Stadium of Light. Heath makes the step up following Bobby Saxton's decision to accept a new job within the club. "The new structure will be a massive benefit to the club in terms of experience, technical knowledge, new ideas and enthusiasm," Reid said.

More involved role
Quinn, who retired from international football after his country's elimination from the FIFA World Cup, will have a more involved role at the training ground as the club attempts to improve on a disappointing 2002/03 season when they narrowly avoided relegation.
