Article body
PSV Eindhoven will compete in the semi-finals of the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the first time in 17 years after defeating Olympique Lyonnais on penalties, and coach Guus Hiddink - who was also in charge in 1988 - said his side's victory was a boost for the club and the entire country. He credited his side for their meteoric rise this season and said earning a likely semi-final against AC Milan was "unthinkable". Lyon coach Paul Le Guen saw his side take the lead through Sylvain Wiltord on ten minutes before Alex's second-half equaliser but conceded that the Dutch side were worthy winners. Le Guen was left to rue missed chances in both legs but believes Lyon can take heart from reaching this stage for the second successive season.
Guus Hiddink, PSV coach
It was an excellent evening for PSV and Dutch football. When you look at where the squad started in August, against [FK] Crvena Zvezda [in the third qualifying round] and now we are in the semi-final, it's almost unthinkable. Our squad have picked things up quickly though, and we have no egos. PSV dominated and Alex's goal was excellent. In the first half of extra time we became tired as we were playing the long ball too early but we rectified that at the interval and began playing short passes. We have a complete game; it is not a case of luck. We compiled the penalty list yesterday and although I had to push some players to take the penalties, for example [Wilfred] Bouma - I'm glad I did. Now we have AC Milan and this is like a parallel to 1988, when we played them - and won.
Paul Le Guen, Lyon coach
If I could replay the game, nothing would change in terms of my approach. PSV deserved the win but we were left to regret missed chances and that's hard to comprehend. In two games there was little difference between the sides, perhaps we'll have more luck next time. Lyon had more chances in both matches so we are very disappointed, but we have reached the quarter-finals and can take heart from that. We can now take our confidence to the French league.
Wilfred Bouma, PSV defender
This achievement is a combination of luck and our way of playing. For my penalty, I just picked a corner and scored - it was a relief after my header allowed Lyon to take the lead earlier.
