The Peruvian midfielder played an important role in the Rossoneri’s 2-1 win over Benfica at London’s Wembley Stadium. “Víctor Benítez, a European champion with the Rossoneri, has left us,” said Milan in a statement. “Our deepest condolences go to his family, together with the embrace of all AC Milan fans.”

Benítez joined Milan from Argentina’s Boca Juniors in 1962 and played 38 games in two spells with the Rossoneri. He also played in Italy for Messina, Roma, Venezia and Inter.

He won the Coppa Italia with Roma in 1968/69. “A playmaker who used to roll up his sleeves,” the Roma website wrote in praising his vision and willingness to graft for the team. “He has been the only Peruvian player in our history.”
