Ten-man Algeria upset Egypt

Hocine Achiou gave Algeria a 2-1 victory over Egpyt while Patrick Mboma's treble for Cameroon undid Zimbabwe.

Mamouni opener
Algeria went ahead against Egpyt, through Mamar Mamouni's 13th-minute header from a corner. However, Egypt drew level when Ahmed Belal chipped the ball over Algerian keeper Lounes Gaouaoui in the 26th minute.

Against the run of play
Algeria had Mamouni sent off early in the second half, referee Alain Hamer showing him a second yellow card after he pushed Ahmed Hassan in the face. Against the run of play, however, the ten men stole victory as Achiou, a 55th-minute replacement for Djamel Belmadi, ran through the Egypt defence to fire home.

Mboma hat-trick
In the section's other match, Patrick Mboma scored a hat-trick as defending champions Cameroon proved too strong for Zimbabwe. After Peter Ndlovu had headed Zimbabwe into a shock lead, Mboma equalised and he then set up Modeste Mbami to put Cameroon in front. Mboma's second goal, a close-range effort just before the break, appeared to give Cameroon some breathing space but Ndlovu reduced the deficit with a penalty after a Rigobert Song foul in the box.

Nyandoro consolation
Mboma then completed his hat-trick, turning in a cross from Timothee Atouba, and Mbami made it 5-2 with a fierce strike from outside the box. Esrom Nyandoro's equally spectacular effort for Zimbabwe rounded off the scoring.
