HB take Faroese title

HB Tórshavn have secured their 21st Faroese league title after a 2-1 win in the local derby against B36 Tórshavn.

Three points clear of EB/Streymur at the top of the standings at the start of the day, the defending champions needed just a point to retain their crown going into the final match of the season. Fródi Benjaminsen settled any lingering nerves early on when he scored from a corner, and HB stretched their lead five minutes before the interval when left-back Hendrik Rubeksen tucked away the rebound after a long-range free-kick came back off the post.

B36 made a game of it by pulling a goal back two minutes later through Christian R. Mouritsen, making for a tense second half, but though HB lay deep and invited pressure, B36 were unable to find an equaliser. After the match HB captain Benjaminsen received the championship trophy from UEFA president Michel Platini.

"I was shocked, really," said HB coach Julian Hansen. "I was surprised that we were so nervous and so outplayed. We were always half a metre behind them. They played good, flowing football, the best I have ever seen B36 play. We never got close to them and in the end we had to change our system in order to get to them.

"But in the end we won and seems as though it's always been like that; even if we have been under pressure for long spells we still win. This team is mentally strong and disciplined."
