RSC Anderlecht forward Dieudonné Mbokani has been elected Belgium's player of the year for 2012.

The 27-year-old DR Congo international claimed the 59th version of the award, voted for by sports journalists and football dignities, by a large margin, receiving 401 points with KRC Genk striker Jelle Vossen second with 178 and Anderlecht's Silvio Proto third. Mbokani, who joined the Brussels club in summer 2011, succeeds Mauves team-mate Matías Suárez as the Golden Boot winner.

"I dedicate the Golden Boot to my wife and son," said the former R. Standard de Liège attacker, who is currently with his country at the Africa Cup of Nations. "I also thank the team, the coach [John van den Brom], Ariël Jacobs [last season's coach] and also the Congolese people."

Mbokani hit 26 Belgian First League goals in 2012 and also scored against FC Zenit St Petersburg and Málaga CF in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, having already netted four times in three qualifiers.
