AS Roma trimmed the gap at the Serie A summit to six points by overcoming Hellas Verona FC 3-1 on a day when AC Milan recorded a dramatic 2-1 victory at Cagliari Calcio.

After leaders Juventus were held to a 1-1 draw at SS Lazio on Saturday, Rudi Garcia's men knew victory was paramount to reignite their title ambitions. The game hung in the balance when Verona midfielder Emil Hallfredsson wiped out Adem Ljajić's opener shortly after half-time. However, Gervinho restored the visitors' lead on the hour and Francesco Totti made sure of the result from the spot with eight minutes left.

In the late kick-off, ACF Fiorentina missed the opportunity to move within a point of third-placed SSC Napoli despite fighting back from 2-1 down against Genoa CFC to lead 3-2, Alberto Aquilani hitting a hat-trick. Sebastian De Maio levelled for the visitors with 13 minutes to go.

Also on Sunday, Mario Balotelli and Giampaolo Pazzini both struck in the last three minutes as Milan clinched their second consecutive league win under Clarence Seedorf. As for fifth-placed FC Internazionale Milano, they were held to a goalless draw at home to Calcio Catania, while Parma FC edged Udinese Calcio 1-0 courtesy of Amauri's 35th-minute effort.

Torino FC prevailed by the same scoreline against Atalanta BC, and Bologna FC drew 1-1 at UC Sampdoria. Meanwhile, AS Livorno Calcio eased their relegation fears by consigning fellow strugglers US Sassuolo Calcio to a 3-1 defeat, with all four goals coming in the first half.
