Portugal round-up: Porto keep their distance

Leaders FC Porto stayed clear of Vitória Guimarães after a thrilling victory over SL Benfica.

Deco the difference
Brazilian playmaker Deco was the matchwinner with a 71st-minute free-kick after he had been brought down by Éder. The full-back was duly sent off to complete a miserable day - it was Éder's first-half own goal that brought Porto level following Tiago's third-minute strike for visitors Benfica.

Costa gets his cards
Tiago rose to head past Nuno and silence the Das Antas stadium. But when Éder unwittingly turned Paulo Ferreira's cross past his own goalkeeper, Porto were back in the game. And while the sending-off of Porto captain Jorge Costa shortly before half-time handed the initiative back to Benfica, the Lisbon team were unable to make the advantage count.

Captain counted out
Other casualties of a match which delivered 73 fouls were Benfica substitute Miguel - who received his marching orders in the closing stages - and Benfica captain Ljubinko Drulovic who had to be replaced due to concussion.

Pinto powers Sporting
Elsewhere, João Pinto returned from a five-month suspension as Sporting Clube de Portugal won 2-0 in the Lisbon derby against CF Os Belenenses. Pinto, who had been banned after clashing with the referee in Portugal's FIFA World Cup defeat by South Korea, marked his comeback with the first goal - a header from Toñito's cross. Ricardo Quaresma added a second with a cross-cum-shot in second-half added time.

Guimarães victory
Guimarães were impressive 2-1 victors at FC Paços de Ferreira to go second in the table, three points above Benfica and Sporting. Brazilian winger Guga scored a late clincher after Carlos Carneiro had cancelled out Rafael's first-half opener for Guimarães.

Home sweet home
Boavista FC went down to a fourth defeat - 1-0 at SC Braga, with Gabriel Bordí the scorer. Promoted Moreirense FC marked their return to the Joaquim Almeida Freitas stadium after a four-game absence caused by ground renovations with a 2-0 victory against CD Nacional. Armando and Flávio Meireles were the men on target against another divisional newcomer.

Coimbra make a point
The other promoted side, Clube Académica de Coimbra, stayed bottom of the table without a win after a 1-1 home draw against SC Beira-Mar. Coimbra captain Dário earned a point after Ricardo Sousa had put the visitors ahead. The match between Vitória Setúbal and UD Leiria ended 0-0.
