Long service
The Irish international was made stand-in captain by caretaker manager Glenn Roeder in the absence of Alan Shearer towards the end of the season, and is keen to see out his career at the club he joined from Blackburn Rovers FC in 1997. "I'm extremely delighted to get my new contract sorted," said the 30-year-old Republic of Ireland Player of the Year. "I've already had nine great years here and I'm now looking forward to five more."
