Újpesti TE have parted company with coach Géza Mészöly after they failed to clinch the Hungarian title following a last-day defeat by FC Fehérvár.
New appointment
The 39-year-old former Hungary defender leaves the Szusza Ferenc stadium after two and a half years in charge along with goalkeeping coach István Brockhauser. Club spokesman Péter Kovács claimed a replacement would be installed by 20 June. Újpest lost 3-1 at home to Fehérvár as rivals Debreceni VSC, winners against Pápa TFC, were crowned champions on Saturday.
UEFA Cup place
"I wish every club could have such a good coach and personality as Mészöly has been during his time here," said Kovács. "He has brought success but for what we want to achieve, we need a new technical staff." As First Division runners-up, Újpest will play in the UEFA Cup first qualifying round.
