Turkey round-up: Besiktas in command

Besiktas JK beat Samsunspor 2-0 to stay firmly in charge of the Super League on Sunday.

Besiktas JK struck twice in the second half to defeat Samsunspor 2-0 and stay firmly in charge of the Turkish Super League on Sunday.

Quality volley
Sergen Yalçin squandered a penalty on four minutes but Tümer Metin made amends when he opened the scoring four minutes after the break, knocking in a cross at the far post. With twenty minutes to go, Ilhan Mansiz made it 2-0 with a first-class volley.

Depleted Fener
In their first match since the resignation of German coach Werner Lorant, a depleted Fenerbahçe SK side without Rüstü Reçber, Ariel Ortega and Zoran Mirkovic, only managed a goaless draw with Izmir team Göztepe. It was a day for the goalkeepers, who produced a succession of fine saves.

Trabzonspor held
Malatyaspor held Trabzonspor 2-2, Tolga Seyhan and Marco Aurelio ensuring the sides went into the break a goal apiece. Erman Özgür put the visitors into the lead after collecting a pass from Fatih Tekke in the penalty area but Hasan Özer headed in Timuçin Beyazit's free-kick to level.

Altay thriller
Altay GK edged out Istanbulspor AS 4-3 in a thrilling encounter. Ümit Inal and Sinan Kaloglu thrust the home side into an early lead and when minute Ümit added his second on 54 minutes following Tahir Karapinar's cross from the left, there appeared no way back for the visitors. Mehmet Yozgatli and Cenk Isler, however, scored two goals in as many minutes to secure a lifeline before Sinan Kaloglu calmed nerves by hitting a fourth.

Arif winner
Galatasaray SK beat Gaziantepspor 2-1 on Friday, the home team going into the lead through Ibrahim Toraman's 43rd-minute header. A minute later, Berkant Göktan equalised after Riadh Bouazizi's mistake before Arif Erdem's 25-metre strike ricocheted in off the crossbar

Akyüz decisive
Diyarbakirspor edged out Elazigspor 1-0 in a match played in driving snow, Saffet Akyüz scoring the only goal of the game on 54 minutes, burying a rebound off goalkeeper Richard Kingston. Elsewhere, Gençlerbirligi cruised to a 2-0 victory over a toothless Bursaspor in Ankara while Adanspor AS thwarted the recent progress with Necati Ates' 56th-minute winner.
