Mainz make their point at Hamburg

1. FSV Mainz 05 kept alive hopes of avoiding relegation despite being held by Hamburger SV but for VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach the battle appears almost over.

Relegation threatened 1. FSV Mainz 05 enjoyed a bittersweet afternoon as they picked up a valuable point away to Hamburger SV to pull six points clear of bottom side VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach who look consigned to life in the 2. Bundesliga after another defeat.

Zidan form
Mainz were big underdogs going into their match in Hamburg but in the end came within seven minutes of victory only to be denied by Paolo Guerrero's equaliser. That would have lifted them to within touching distance of the safety zone and if they do avoid relegation they will owe much to Mohammed Zidan. The Egypt striker broke the deadlock on 12 minutes with his eleventh goal in 12 Bundesliga appearances since joining Mainz from Werder Bremen.

Mönchengladbach woe
Juan Pablo Sorín equalised from the penalty spot midway through the half before Fabian Gerber restored the visitors' advantage just before the hour. It looked like being enough for a crucial triumph before Guerrero struck. There was no such late drama at Hannover 96, as Dutch forward Arnold Bruggink's first-half strike proved enough to see off Mönchengladbach, who are cast eight points adrift of safety at the foot of the table with four games remaining.
