AEL name new chairman

Local businessman Sakis Karapateas has been elected chairman of AEL Limassol FC at a board meeting.

AEL Limassol FC have named local businessman Sakis Karapateas as their new president following the departure of Georgos Frantzis.

Third chairman
Karapateas was elected at a board meeting on Wednesday night, and will be in charge until 2004. He becomes the club's third chairman of the season following the early departures of Frantzis and his predecessor Demetris Solomides.

Poor start
AEL began their season poorly, picking up just one win in their opening eight league games, and were eliminated from the UEFA Cup in the preliminary round. However, things began to improve for the Limassol side after the arrival of Greek coach Yiannis Mantzourakis, and AEL currently lie in fifth place in the Cypriot First Division table.

'Top Priority'
Upon taking over, Karapateas clearly stated his objectives. "We have to all work together to lift AEL to the position that they deserve," he said. "We all have to remain calm and focused to meet the expectations of our supporters. The club's first priority will be to pay the salaries of the players, who have not been paid in two months."
