Sporting take delight in Derlei

Sporting Clube de Portugal fired another warning to their Liga rivals with a convincing victory on the 2007/08 campaign’s opening night.

Having already beaten champions FC Porto last weekend to win the Super Cup, the Lisbon giants were 4-1 home winners against A. Académica de Coimbra with Derlei, Liedson, Tonel and João Moutinho all on target. Derlei, signed on loan from FC Dinamo Moskva having previously won the UEFA Champions League with Porto, opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark before the ever-prolific Liedson doubled the advantage as half-time approached. Central defender Tonel added a third against his former club and, although there was time for Hungarian forward Szabolcs Gyánó to hit a late consolation, the last word went to Moutinho from the spot.
