Multescu takes Politehnica helm

Members

Gheorghe Multescu has taken over from Stelian Gherman as coach of FC Politehnica AEK Timisoara.

Disastrous run
The experienced coach has been charged with keeping the newly-promoted side in Divizia A after a disastrous run of seven consecutive defeats has left the early season challengers third from bottom of the Romanian table.

Third man
Gherman resigned this weekend, leaving Multescu to become the third man to coach the club this season. Basarab Panduru had started the season as the club's coach, leading his side to a number of early victories before a slide in form led to his dismissal.

Quick change
Gherman, who led Politehnica to promotion in 2001/02, replaced Panduru as coach of the Timisoara side and was due to remain at the club until the end of the season, but club president Anton Dobos decided that a change was necessary to avoid relegation.

Rumour mill
Rumours have persisted in Romania that neither Panduru or Gherman received the level of support they had expected from the club's directors, but Gherman refused to comment, saying only: "I'll never come back to Timisoara."

Multescu persuaded
Dobos managed to persuade Multescu, who started this season as coach of Turkish side Gaziantepspor, to return to his home country despite the coach's claims that he would stay in Turkey and never take charge of a Romanian club again.

Crisis management
Multescu, a former FC Dinamo Bucuresti and FC Jiul Petrosani player, started his coaching career with Romanian sides Jiul and Astra Ploiesti before heading for Turkey to coach Samsunspor and Adanaspor AS. An expert in saving clubs in trouble, he will take charge of Politehnica until the end of the season.
