Free transfer
The 24-year-old has rejected the chance of UEFA Champions League football with Swiss champions Grasshopper-Club to move to France on a free transfer. Cabanas, who scored the winning goal for his country in last week's 3-2 victory in a home UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifier against Albania, was out of contract with Grasshoppers and has signed a three-year deal with the Brittany club.
Hard to leave
Speaking to his former club's official website today, he said: "In my heart I will always remain a Grasshopper." The player had spent ten years with the club but was always tipped to leave this summer, after much interest from across Europe.
European hope
Guingamp are set to enter the UEFA Intertoto Cup, starting at the third-round stage next month. The first leg is due on 19/20 July, with the return scheduled for 26 July. If successful, Guingamp would then face a two-legged semi-final and final for the chance of a place in the UEFA Cup.
