Manager Rafael Benítez was proud to report that striker Fernando Torres has underlined his commitment to Liverpool FC by signing an enhanced contract, saying: "This sends out a very positive message to everyone connected with the club."

'Special talent'
The 25-year-old Spanish international has accepted a new deal reflecting his standing at Anfield. His contract still expires in 2013, but the club and the player have agreed a clause giving them the option of a further 12 months. "Fernando is one of the best strikers in the game today and, at his age, can only get better," said Benítez. "Every major side would want him in their team, but he has shown how much he wants to achieve success at Liverpool by committing his future to the club. He's a special talent, but still has the hunger to improve his game."

Signing on
Torres has scored 38 goals in 57 Premier League games since arriving from Club Atlético de Madrid on a six-year contract in 2007. Liverpool finished second in the English top flight, four points adrift of Manchester United FC, to earn a place in next season's UEFA Champions League group stage. Dirk Kuyt, Daniel Agger and Steven Gerrard have also signed new deals in recent months as Liverpool continue to search for the English title that has eluded them since 1990.
