Newly-promoted 1. FSV Mainz 05 were the most high-profile casualty in the first round of the German Cup which kicked off on Friday and Saturday, succumbing 2-1 after extra time to fourth division VfB Lübeck.

Wolfsburg win
Bundesliga champions VfL Wolfsburg, however, had no such trouble. Armin Veh's side continued where they left off last season by defeating SV Wehen Wiesbaden 4-1, Zvjezdan Misimović scoring twice, although Bayer 04 Leverkusen found SV Babelsberg 03 a tougher proposition to overcome, winning 1-0 thanks to Eren Derdiyok's 67th-minute strike.

Close call
UEFA Europa League entrants Hertha BSC Berlin required two goals in the final two minutes of extra time to secure a 3-1 win at Regionalliga side SC Preussen Münster, while VfB Stuttgart recovered from falling behind to defeat SC Sonnenhof Grossaspach 4-1. FC Schalke 04 also hit four at fifth-tier outfit TSV Germania Windeck.

Debut goals
Elsewhere, Argentinian striker Lucas Barrios scored on his BV Borussia Dortmund bow as the 1997 UEFA Champions League winners overcame a resolute SpVgg Weiden 3-1, while fellow debutant Lukas Podolski rounded off a 3-0 victory for 1. FC Köln at BSV Kickers Emden. Unlike Mainz, promoted 1. FC Nürnberg and SC Freiburg booked their places in the second round with victories over SG Dynamo Dresden and SV Elversberg respectively. The first round continues on Sunday and Monday with FC Bayern München and Hamburger SV among the teams in action.
