"I know the team well," said former Real Sociedad de Fútbol striker Meho Kodro, who has taken charge of FK Sarajevo following Dženan Uščuplić's departure.

Former Real Sociedad de Fútbol and FC Barcelona striker Meho Kodro has taken charge of FK Sarajevo following the departure of Dženan Uščuplić.

The 47-year-old watched from the sidelines as Sarajevo lost their first game of the season, 1-0 to NK Široki Brijeg, at the weekend, and will take charge of the club for the first time when they meet NK Travnik in the Bosnian and Herzegovinian Cup tonight. "I have been in contact with the club management for a year," he said. "I knew what was happening and what to expect. I know the team well."

Uščuplić parted company with the capital outfit the day before the Široki Brijeg match – despite his side being unbeaten in domestic football since March. He had led Sarajevo to the UEFA Europa League play-offs, where they lost 10-2 on aggregate to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. "That heavy defeat left a bad impression and because of it unfortunately all the previous good work has been forgotten," said Kodro.

Capped 15 times, Kodro started out at FK Velež, moving abroad to represent La Real, Barcelona, CD Tenerife, Deportivo Alavés and Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC. He was coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina for one game in 2008 – a 2-2 draw with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia – in between spells as an assistant coach and youth coach at Real Sociedad.
