APOEL on track for double after cup triumph

APOEL FC completed the first part of a potential double by defeating AEL Limassol FC 4-2 in the Cypriot Cup final in Larnaca, midfielder George Efrem scoring twice.

APOEL FC secured a record 21st Cypriot Cup title with a 4-2 win against AEL Limassol FC in Larnaca.

The Nicosia club – who will complete an historic 'double double' should they avoid defeat at Ermis Aradippou FC on Sunday – fell behind to a Maic Sema goal. Tomás De Vincenti drew the sides level, beating goalkeeper Karim Fegrouche with a clever 35m lob direct from a free-kick.

George Efrem put APOEL in front just before half-time, poking the ball in from close range, and the Cyprus international was on target again immediately after the interval, curling into the empty net after Fegrouche came rushing off his line.

Former Liverpool FC defender John Arne Riise drilled in a trademark free-kick on the hour to put the contest beyond doubt for a side now on the verge of a second successive double. Valentinos Sielis scored a late consolation.

"It has been amazing," said Riise. "It has been a long time since I last played in a final. We deserved the victory. We were poor in the opening 30 minutes but then we improved. When I scored, I knew the game was finished which was why I celebrated it so much in front of our fans."
