Two goals from captain Wayne Rooney – including his first from open play in more than two months – gave Manchester United FC victory against Sunderland AFC.

• Two Wayne Rooney goals give Manchester United FC 2-0 win against Sunderland AFC.
• Rooney scores penalty and then adds first goal from open play since Boxing Day.
• Sunderland's Wes Brown, who used to play for United, sent off at Old Trafford.
• United now third in the Premier League, ten points adrift of leaders Chelsea FC.

Southampton FC stay fifth following 1-0 loss at West Bromwich Albion FC.
• West Brom have picked up 12 points from seven games since Tony Pulis took over.
• Glenn Murray on target twice and sent off as Crystal Palace FC win 3-1 at West Ham United FC.
Swansea City AFC, Stoke City FC and Newcastle United FC also pick up three points.
• Chelsea face Tottenham Hotspur FC in League Cup final on Sunday.
