SV Werder Bremen missed the chance to keep up the pressure on the leading pack in the 1. Bundesliga after a 0-0 draw at 1. FC Köln.
Bremen, who could have leapfrogged FC Bayern München into fifth place, were frustrated by the league’s bottom club on Sunday. The point will be particularly precious for Köln in their fight for survival, but they could have done with all three.
Good start for Funkel
Köln have taken just 14 points from 22 games but looked revitalised under new coach Friedhelm Funkel. Bremen had to play much of the match with ten men after Holger Wehlage was sent off, although Marco Bode nearly snatched a late winner.
Sunday’s other match saw FC Energie Cottbus move away from the bottom three with a 3-0 victory at home against FC Hansa Rostock. Christian Beeck opened the scoring on 31 minutes before Vasile Miriuta put the game beyond the visitors two minutes later. Marko Topic sealed the victory with his side’s third in the 68th minute.
