Greece round-up: AEK stay in pole position

AEK Athens remain top of the Ethniki Katigoria despite drawing 1-1 with Xanthi FC on Sunday.

AEK Athens remain top of the Ethniki Kategoria despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Xanthi FC on Sunday.

Solo effort
Abderrahim Ouakili scored his 13th goal of the season, a marvellous solo effort, to put Xanthi in front in the 38th minute. But Christos Maladenis equalised midway through the second half after neat play from Akis Zikos and Vasilis Lakis released him on goal. AEK could be without with their leading scorer Demis Nikolaidis for their UEFA Cup match against Internazionale FC on Thursday after he was stretchered off in the first half.

Olympiakos third
Olympiakos Piraeus FC moved up to third in the table, two points behind the leaders, after surviving a spirited fightback from FC PAOK Thessaloniki to win 3-2. The game was only nine minutes old when Brazilian striker Giovanni scored a sublime goal to put Olympiakos in front. Five minutes later Stelios Giannakopoulos, after being set up by Giovanni, rifled a second over goalkeeper Vangelis Pourliotopoulos into PAOK's net.

PAOK comeback
Olympiakos continued to surge forward and were rewarded with a third after 17 minutes when Predrag Djordevic broke free to round Pourliotopoulos for an easy finish. After the break, however, PAOK came back into the game when Giorgios Georgiadis drilled the ball home in the 54th minute. Four minutes later Georgiadis scored his second of the night from the penalty spot, after Yasemis Yasemakis was brought down in the area.

Asteras held
Ethnikos Asteras were held to a 1-1 draw by rock-bottom Panahaiki GC after Youssef Moughfire cancelled out Giorgos Kontopoulos’ first half strike in the 53rd minute. FC Aris Thessaloniki, under new coach Bernd Krauss, held off the challenge of Aigaleo to win 1-0 courtesy of Angelos Charisteas' 20th-minute goal. In the day's other game OFI Crete fought out a scoreless draw with Panionios GS.
