Captain Joseph Zerafa said Birkirkara FC were "hungry for more silverware" after beating last season's double winners Valletta FC 2-1 in Friday's Maltese Super Cup.
Edward Herrera's goal 21 minutes from time decided matters at the Ta' Qali National Stadium after a header from Malta defender Jonathan Caruana before the hour had cancelled out Eliandro's early strike.
"It is always nice to kick off the new season with a trophy victory over Valletta," said Zerafa, whose Birkirkara team lost the league title to Valletta on the last day of the campaign in May. "We showed that we are all geared up and hungry for more silverware."
Birkirkara defender Nikola Vukanac added: "After the disappointment of losing the title in the last match of the season, we were all determined to kick off the new campaign on a positive note. May's disappointment has made us even stronger."
