Sporting Clube de Portugal moved to the top of the Portuguese first division table after beating Varzim SC 4-0 at the José Alvalade stadium on Sunday evening.
All four goals came in an impressive first-half display, as Mário Jardel (2), Ricardo Quaresma and João Pinto all struck to give Sporting an unassailable lead. In the care of temporary coach Victoriano Ramos, Varzim shut out their hosts after the break but still remain three points adrift at the foot of the table.
Boavista FC suffered a UEFA Champions League hangover as they slipped up at home against CS Marítimo, with Brazilian striker André Moreira scoring the only goal of the game. Elpídio Silva was sent off for Boavista after 63 minutes and the result sees last year's champions slip to fourth place.
Gil Vicente FC beat FC Alverca 3-2 at the Adelino Ribeiro Novo stadium but the match ended in controversial fashion after referee Paulo Paraty showed José Lemos, the captain of Gil Vicente, a second yellow card but failed to send the player off.
Lomba the hero
Lemos was booked in the first half after conceding a penalty and was shown a second yellow in injury time. The player confirmed after the match that he was booked twice. Lourenco Manoel and Sérgio Lomba twice put the home side in front, but Alverca drew level each time through Paulo Zeferino and Ricardo Ramires, from the penalty spot. Lomba became the hero when he scored the winning goal with 20 minutes remaining.
Leiria hit seven
UD Leiria moved up to sixth after beating SC Salgueiros 7-0 with four goals from Vanderlei Derlei. The other scorers were Lima Maciel, who struck twice, and Rafael Jacques. CD Santa Clara beat Vitória Setúbal 1-0 courtesy of Além Telmo's 21st-minute strike.
