Trenčín seal historic Slovakian double

FK AS Trenčín have been crowned champions of Slovakia for the first time, sealing the double with two games to spare after nearest rivals MŠK Žilina suffered defeat.

FK AS Trenčín have been crowned champions of Slovakia for the first time just three weeks after claiming their maiden Slovak Cup.

Second-placed MŠK Žilina's 2-1 home defeat against ŠK Slovan Bratislava handed the Slovak First League title to Trenčín, who are now eight points clear with two games remaining. Žilina's loss means Saturday's top-of-the-table clash has been rendered academic.

Trenčín were three points adrift of Žilina going into the winter break, but a ten-game winning streak secured an unlikely championship for Martin Ševela's charges. The team from a city near the Czech border with a population of 56,000 have an average age of just under 22.

Trenčín won the Slovak Cup for the first time after beating FK Senica 3-2 on penalties on 1 May. Success did not come instantly when former AFC Ajax and Netherlands winger Tschen La Ling took control of Trenčín in 2007 but, after a second-place finish 12 months ago, the title dream has come true.

Progress, however, has come at a price. Key players such as Bosnian midfielder Haris Hajradinovič and Nigerian winger Moses Simon departed for Belgian side KAA Gent during the winter transfer window. Last summer, Tomáš Malec – Trenčín's 2013/14 top scorer – moved to Rosenborg BK.

On a positive note, Brazilian winger Jairo decided to stay and the return of Dutch winger Gino van Kessel provided a boost. Trenčín are unbeaten in 2015.
