Shovkovskiy is Dynamo's Ukrainian Cup final hero

Olexandr Shovkovskiy saved two shoot-out penalties on his 600th FC Dynamo Kyiv appearance as they beat FC Shakhtar Donetsk on penalties to win the Ukrainian Cup.

Forty-year-old goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy was the FC Dynamo Kyiv hero as they beat FC Shakhtar Donetsk on penalties to win the Ukrainian Cup and complete the domestic double.

The game was goalless after 120 minutes in Kyiv, and Shakhtar looked set for shoot-out victory as they led 3-1 after three goes each. But on Shovkovskiy's 600th competitive match for Dynamo – the first ever to reach that mark – he saved from Taison and Yaroslav Rakitskiy then hit the bar to force sudden death; Yevhen Khacheridi made it 5-4 and Olexandr Gladkiy was denied by the keeper.

In normal time Darijo Srna threatened first for Shakhtar with a powerful shot off the bar while at the other end Andriy Yarmolenko embarked on a solo run only to be frustrated by Shakhtar goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov. In extra time, Dynamo's Khacheridi had a shot blocked on the line by fellow Ukraine defender Vyacheslav Shevchuk, and Shovkovskiy – who was to win his tenth Ukrainian Cup – gave a hint of what was to come with a brilliant save from substitute Gladkiy.

Dynamo had Serhiy Rybalka sent off before the end but after the shoot-out they could celebrate their 11th Ukrainian Cup triumph, and fifth final defeat of Shakhtar. It is their eighth Ukrainian double to add to the four they did in Soviet times.

Dynamo coach Serhiy Rebrov said: "This is a very important victory. We won the league and wanted similar success in the Ukrainian Cup but understood it would be a game of similar importance for Shakhtar. However, we were better in normal time and could have won it before the penalties. The lads showed their character during the shoot-out while Shovkovskiy helped us once again. The credit should go to the whole team."

"We are very disappointed after this shoot-out," said Shakhtar captain Darijo Srna. "We played a very difficult game, had a two-goal advantage on penalties and still lost. We cannot blame anybody. It is a football, it is a shoot-out, it is Shovkovskiy."
