AS Monaco opened up a daunting ten-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 with a comprehensive 3-0 victory at home to title-holders Olympique Lyonnais in the first match after the winter break.
Second-placed Lyon needed victory in the Friday night game to close the gap, and were on top in the opening stages. But on 23 minutes Lyon striker Giovane Elber was forced off by injury and replaced by Eric Carrière, and Monaco began to take control.
Giuly and Morientes score
Ten minutes before the break, Ludovic Giuly pounced on an underhit backpass and flicked the ball past Lyon goalkeeper Grégory Coupet. Monaco doubled their lead three minutes after half-time when Fernando Morientes headed in a Jérôme Rothen corner.
Although Lyon pushed to get back into the game, the last word was had by the leaders in the final seconds, when Morientes was fouled by Edmilson in the box and Giuly converted the penalty.
In Saturday's games, Paris-Saint Germain FC and FC Sochaux Montbéliard can both narrow Monaco's lead. PSG face Lille OSC while Sochaux take on OGC Nice.
