Mario Jardel hit yet another hat-trick as Sporting Clube de Portugal eased past nine-man UD Leiria with a 4-1 win in the Portuguese first division on Saturday.
Two men off
Jardel opened the scoring with a headed goal from a corner in the 21st minute and Ricardo Quaresma hit a powerful drive to double Sporting’s lead three minutes later. Third-placed Leiria were in disarray just before half-time when João Manuel was sent off and his team-mate Éder followed him off the field four minutes after the break.
Silas gets consolation
The Brazilian striker made it 3-0 with a penalty just before the break after a foul on Quaresma. However, despite their numerical disadvantage, Leiria did find the net in the 78th minute through Silas. Jardel was not finished, however, and completed his hat-trick two minutes from time after João Pinto’s cross. Jardel now has 28 goals for the season from just 18 matches.
Sporting’s victory took them back to the top of the table, one point in front of Boavista FC. Saturday’s late match saw SC Braga held 0-0 at home by Vitória SC.
