Belgium round-up: Brugge regain top spot

Club Brugge KV moved top of the Jupiler League with a 4-1 win against R. Antwerp FC on Sunday.

Club Brugge KV moved back to the top of the Jupiler League on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over relegation-threatened R. Antwerp FC.

Verheyen on target
Brugge opened the scoring after 14 minutes, when a rasping shot from Norwegian striker Rune Lange stung the palms of visiting goalkeeper Yves Feys and Gert Verheyen made no mistake from close range. The second goal duly came after 32 minutes, as Gaëtan Englebert fired home after an unselfish lay-off from Verheyen.

Simic penalty
A two-goal lead swiftly became three eight minutes later, Verheyen again in the thick of the action to slot home his second following a pin-point cross from Peter Van der Heyden. Tony Sergeant struck back for Antwerp five minutes into the second period, but this merely provided temporary relief as Brugge restored their three-goal advantage in the 55th minute. Jurgen De Neys handled in the area and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty, Josip Simic converting to make it 4-1.

Beveren in charge
Bottom-of-the-table KSK Beveren scored a late winner in their relegation clash with fellow strugglers KSC Eendracht Aalst. Eendracht dominated throughout but were unable to make their chances count and were made to pay by the visitors with just five minutes to go. Following the breakdown of an Eendracht attack, Beveren countered and Steven Wostijn fired the ball into the bottom corner for a hard-fought win. However, the result still sees Beveren rooted to the foot of the table.

Defeat for Lierse
K. Lierse SK continue to hover just six points above the relegation zone after going down 1-0 at home to struggling RAA Louviéroise. A Frédéric Tilmant effort two minutes into the second period following a corner was all that separated the two sides.

Genk match postponed
Meanwhile, the much-anticipated clash between second-placed KRC Genk and third-placed RSC Anderlecht was postponed due to Genk missing three players on African Cup of Nations duty. The match will now be played next month at a date yet to be arranged.
