Basel complete double with Swiss Cup success

"Even a Hollywood director could not have come up with a better ending," said Benjamin Huggel as he bowed out at FC Basel 1893 with a goal and a shoot-out victory in the Swiss Cup final.

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer was the hero as FC Basel 1893 completed a domestic double with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win against FC Luzern following a 1-1 draw in Wednesday's Swiss Cup final.

Luzern gave a good account of themselves in Berne, and forced Sommer to make a number of saves before Alexander Frei set up Benjamin Huggel to head Basel in front ten minutes after the break. Tomislav Puljić nodded the equaliser past Sommer 12 minutes later, and the game was headed for penalties. Basel's first four takers all found the target, but Luzern's Moshe Ohayon and Florian Stahel could not beat Sommer, and 'Bebbi' claimed their 11th Swiss Cup.

"It is such a great ending – not even a Hollywood director could have come up a better one," said Huggel, playing his last match before retirement. Sommer added: "We took such good penalties because we have great stamina – and a superb team, of course." Defeat was hard to take for Luzern coach Murat Yakin, who noted: "We showed that we could put Basel under pressure. We dominated but we couldn't hold our nerve at the end."
