Vincenzo Montella's first goal of the season moved AS Roma back to the top of Serie A on Saturday as they beat AC Perugia 1-0.
Montella, playing for only the ninth time in an injury-hit season, rewarded Fabio Capello's decision to recall him with the only goal of the game at the Olimpico stadium. His 58th-minute effort moved the defending champions back to the top of the table, two points clear of Juventus FC - who play city rivals Torino Calcio on Sunday night.
Montella closed down
Roma's best effort in the first half came in the 22nd minute when Montella was closed down by keeper Eduardo Córdoba, who saved at the striker's feet after a cross by Emerson. Perugia had gone close in the sixth minute when Korean Jung-Hwan Ahn turned and shot over from the edge of the area.
The all-important goal came on 59 minutes when Montella headed into an empty net after a cross-shot from Vincent Candela. Two minutes from time Fabio Bazzani's cross from the right gave Perugia's Fabian O'Neill a great chance to equalise but he failed to get his head to the ball.
