Portugal round-up: Sporting regain top spot

Sporting Clube de Portugal moved back to the top after a 3-0 win over CD Santa Clara on Sunday.

Sporting Clube de Portugal returned to the top of Portugal's 1. Liga after defeating CD Santa Clara 3-0 at the São Miguel stadium on Sunday. Sporting are now one point clear of reigning champions Boavista FC in the league standings.

Jardel on target
After an uneventful first half, the Lisbon club were more incisive after the break but only managed to make their domination count in the final 20 minutes. Santa Clara's Brazilian left-back Telmo tripped his fellow countryman César Prates in the penalty area in the 74th minute, and Mario Jardel netted the spot-kick to take his impressive goalscoring tally to 31 goals in 22 matches. Captain Pedro Barbosa added the second with a low shot from 12 metres in the 81st minute and midfield player Paulo Bento completed the scoring with a first-time curling shot from outside the box in the final minute.

Six for Paços
The shock scoreline of the weekend saw FC Paços Ferreira beat SC Salgueiros 6-0 at the Da Mata Real stadium. Paços took the lead in the 12th minute, when Brazilian striker Leonardo was in the right place to head home a free kick. Mauro added a second five minutes from half-time when he raced on to a pass from Zé Nando and beat goalkeeper Ivo to score easily. Paços's dominance continued after the break and they added a third through right-back Mário Sérgio. Salgueiros had Rui Ferreira sent off for a foul in the area in the 71st minute and Pedrinha made no mistake from the spot. Further goals from Zé Manuel and Carlos Carneiro completed the scoring.

Alverca too strong
FC Alverca scored two second-half goals to complete a convincing win over SC Beira Mar. Angolan international striker Quinzinho headed home a Nélson Veríssimo cross in the 77th minute, before Miguel Vargas wrapped up the points ten minutes from time. Beira Mar central defender Vítor Silva was sent off late in the game.

Precious point
Varzim SC climbed out of the relegation places for the first time this season, as they drew 1-1 with SC Farense at the São Luís stadium. Brazilian forward Patrick netted as Farense opened the scoring in the 27th minute, but Varzim levelled seven minutes later, with Russian striker Dmitri Prokopenko heading home a Mariano cross.

Goalless draw
UD Leiria failed to maintain their momentum after a 2-0 win over SL Benfica last week, as they could only manage a goalless draw against Vitória Setúbal at the Dr Magalhães Pessoa stadium.
