UEFA Intertoto Cup entrants Club Atlético de Madrid have signed Argentinian goalkeeper Leo Franco from RCD Mallorca.
Primera División experience
The 27-year-old has been with Mallorca since 1998. He started his career in Argentina with CA Independiente before moving to Spanish Segunda División outfit UD Mérida in 1997.
Franco will compete with Sergio Aragoneses for the No1 jersey at Atlético, after Germán Burgos was released by the club last month. "This is an important step in my sporting career," Franco said after signing a five-year contract. "I have joined the club that I always dreamed of playing for."
Franco hopes that Atlético can emulate Villarreal CF with success in the UEFA Intertoto Cup this summer. "Being in the Intertoto is great for the team when you consider that Villarreal were winners in last year's tournament and then progressed all the way to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup," he said. "Our fans deserve to see the team playing in Europe."
