Van der Weerden heads to Belgium

Ahead of the new season, several Belgian clubs have been strengthening their squads.

KFC Germinal Beerschot have signed Dutch defender Chris van der Weerden from the Dutch side FC Twente. The 32-year-old moves to Belgium following spells in the Dutch league with NEC Nijmegan, SBV Vitesse and PSV Eindhoven.

Brys thoughts
“A player with such a playing record is always welcome. He can play in several positions in defence, and his experience and coaching abilities will add enormously to this young team,” said Germinal Beerschot coach Marc Brys. Brys will, however, be without striker Jurgen Cavens, for at least six weeks. The 25-year-old Belgian international has undergone surgery to repair a tear in his left knee ligament.

Mons strengthen squad
Meanwhile, RAEC Mons have signed the 22-year-old Nigerian striker, Aliyu Datti Mohammed, on a one-year loan deal from first division rivals R. Standard de Liège. Mons have also announced the acquisition of 21-year-old Brazilian defender Daniel De Castro from CR Vasco de Gama, and a promotion to the senior squad for 18-year-old Thomas Duez, both on two-year contracts.

Sint-Truiden summer signing
K. Sint-Truidense VV have signed midfield player Abdoulaye Diawara from French league side Paris Saint-Germain FC. The 21-year-old Mali Olympic squad member has signed a two-year deal with Marc Wilmots’ team, with an option to extend for a further year, after spending last season playing for the PSG second team.

Lokeren move
Finally, KSC Lokeren OV have signed 22-year-old Brazilian defender João Carlos Chaves from Bulgarian side PFC CSKA Sofia, on a three-year contract. Carlos will bring with him the experience of having played five matches in the preliminary stages of the UEFA Champions League.
