Zulte Waregem win second Belgian Cup

Zulte Waregem have won their second Belgian Cup, goalkeeper Sammy Bossut saving twice from the spot as his side got the better of Oostende in a shoot-out following a 3-3 draw in Brussels.

Zulte Waregem have won their second Belgian Cup, beating Oostende 4-2 on penalties at Brussels' Roi Baudouin Stadium, the game having ended 3-3 after 120 minutes. Goalkeeper Sammy Bossut was the hero, making two saves as the final went to a shoot-out for the first time since 1992.

Landry Dimata put Oostende in front on 19 minutes, but Timothy Derijck swiftly replied, tidying up after Brian Hämäläinen's free-kick struck a post. Knowledge Musona hit the bar for Oostende before the break, and Dimata restored their lead nine minutes into the second half with a neat backheel. However, victory celebrations were postponed when oncoming Zulte Waregem substitute Sander Coopman intercepted a defensive header to score.

Francky Dury's side led for the first time in the game in the 111st minute when Babacar Gueye headed in from a free-kick, but Musona levelled from the spot after Henrik Dalsgaard was penalised for handling in the box. However, the goalkeeper had his revenge, saving from Fernando Canesin and Musona in the shoot-out to set up Hämäläinen to convert the winner.

Zulte Waregem's second Belgian Cup – they won their first in 2006 – should give them a place in the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League group stage, unless they can finish in the UEFA Champions League slots as the Belgian league divides into its end-of-season play-off groups.
