De Lucas opts for Chelsea

RCD Espanyol's Enrique De Lucas joined FA Premiership side Chelsea FC on Tuesday.

RCD Espanyol's Enrique De Lucas has joined FA Premiership side Chelsea FC.

Four-year deal
The London club announced today that the 23-year-old midfield player has decided to move to England on a four-year contract. His existing deal with the Barcelona-based club expired at the end of the season and he will move to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.

Close watch
A former Spain Under-21 international, De Lucas came to the attention of Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri while he was in charge of Primera División side Valencia CF and he has kept a close watch on his progress throughout his time in England.

Successful season
De Lucas had a successful season with Espanyol in 2001/02 making 33 appearances and scoring seven goals. He is Chelsea's first signing of the close season as they prepare to compete in next season's UEFA Cup.
